Defining your team’s values

JULY 2017 NEWSLETTER

Avion team

It’s a new financial year and we’re celebrating our successes by taking some well-deserved time-out in sunny Queensland.

While perching by the pool, we’ve taken this opportunity to define who we really are. Avion has come a long way over the years; it’s important we don’t lose sight of the collective characteristics that make us unique.

Getting the team involved

To get everyone’s input on who we are, we decided to do an activity with post-it notes. Everyone wrote down their core values on separate notes and from there, we compiled the top five that best defined us a group.

Avion team values

This was the end result:

  • Creative. At Avion, there’s no such thing as left-brain, right-brain divide. We believe that every project can benefit from our strategic and creative insights.
  • Fair. From how we treat our clients to the content we create, we aspire to ensure the world is a fairer, more accessible place for everyone.
  • Hardworking. Avion works hard and plays hard. We always get our work done on deadline and to a high standard, without sacrificing work–life balance. It’s about working hard, but also working smart.
  • Kind. We’re kind to the planet, to each other and especially to our clients. Working kindly means we think about the bigger picture before we act – and always do so with compassion.
  • Transparent. When you work with Avion, you can trust your copywriters to be clear, open and honest – no matter what.

Creating vision boards to showcase your values

Ok – so that’s great. But how can you actually live your values at work? What can you do to remind your team members what principles you stand for? Vision boards.

We asked everyone to select several images that had meaning to them, relevant to those five values, to create a vision board – which we’ll proudly place on the walls at the Avion office.

The benefits of determining your team values

Establishing your team values has many practical benefits:

  • They contribute to your workplace culture, and foster a harmonious environment.
  • They help you identify the right talent, streamlining the recruitment process and minimising staff turnover rates.
  • They also help you identify clients and peers that you will get along with more easily – leading to more fruitful partnerships.

Beyond that, values also are very powerful for driving successful outcomes:

  • They motivate you, underpin the work you do, and why you do it.
  • They define where you are in the present, and where you’re going in the future.
  • They form a strong part of your brand story and demonstrate what you aspire to be.

So, what are your values?

Till next time,

Natalie and the Avion team
