Powering through Plastic Free July

AUGUST 2019 NEWSLETTER

Avion crew

Hi there,

As they say, ‘teamwork makes the dream work’ and our Avion crew did a fantastic job of coming together for this year’s Plastic Free July! That’s right, once again we went a whole month choosing to refuse single-use plastic to help reduce our environmental impact and raise awareness of plastic pollution.

We even managed to get our Friday snacks from the market plastic-free, without missing out on cheese to accompany our wine. Phew!

Above all, it gave us all great insight into how much single-use plastic we actually use. From lunches and bottled water, to plastic straws and bin liners, the challenge opened our eyes in a big way.

How did Plastic Free July go in 2019?

We weren’t the only participants in this global initiative. In fact, around the world there were 230 million people taking the challenge to go plastic-free in July — an amazing and record-breaking number.

Going from 40 participants in Western Australia in the inaugural 2011 campaign, to 3 million global participants in 2015, and then to 120 million last year — it’s quite some growth!

Plastic Free July participants reduced their household waste by an average of 76 kg during the campaign. They also contributed to a total saving of almost 490 million kgs of plastic waste around the world, showing the huge impact the challenge has even in just one month.

Aligning with our values at Avion

Plastic Free July is a challenge that Avion loves to get behind each year, and living as plastic-free as possible is an ethos we try and abide by outside of July, too. Having a sustainable workplace is something we take great pride in, alongside our values, which are integral to what we do at Avion.
